Horse Barns to Board Horses and Produce Income

You could benefit from increasing the size of your new horse barn. A bigger barn would allow extra space and give you the ability to board horses someday, if not now. The extra space could give ideas for creative equestrian services that may produce extra income.

Imagine your horse stables with extra stalls, tack lockers, and storage space. Not only would the space offset the cost of keeping your own horses, but you’d also enjoy the company of other equestrians.

Equestrian Amenities

What amenities do horse owners in your area look for? Do you already have some benefits to attract their business? Does your property offer trails and access to longer trail systems nearby? Do you have an arena or a large acreage? Do you have experience training horses and riders? These and other creative options will bring in extra income stream and offset your costs.

Expected Income

Boarding fees vary. How much income can you expect? Your overhead and fees depend on the amenities and services that you offer. Full care, partial care, and/or pasture access are all popular in Colorado.

  1. Full Care. If you offer complete care, expect to earn up to $1000 a month. Feed, clean stalls, brush, and bathe, turn out and exercise, and train a horse.
  2. Partial Care. Create à la carte services. Offer stalls, cleaning, turnout, and more. Charge between $300 and $500 a month.
  3. Pasture Access. You can simply charge $200-$400 to others and provide access to your pastures.

#312855

Project 312855, a sample equestrian building also used for cattle features a numeral 6/12 roof pitch. It measures 36′ x 80′ x 10′ and the rich colors are sandstone and burgundy.

Project 513458 (pictured above) is a similar building used for farm and ranch operations. This barn measures 30′ x 60′ x 16′ plus 15-foot lean-tos. Note the two roof pitches, 4/12 and 3/12. Four 8’ x 8’ sliding doors and one 14 x 14′ sliding door provide efficient access. A crossbuck sliding door and a monitor door add more access. To stand out like this animal boarding facility, ask for a Barn Red and Bone White color scheme.

Fitting Everything In

If you decide to build more stables and facilities to board horses, you will be studying several factors. The size of your barn could be restricted by external factors such as local regulations and zoning restrictions. Your location, size of acreage, and the neighborhood type will determine how much freedom you have–to dream and expand your barn plans.

However, even if you simply have a 5-acre parcel in a rural neighborhood, you can assume that three horses will fit into a small barn. Boarding a couple of extra horses could work, especially if you have access to nearby BLM land, pastures, or trail systems.
