Barn Raisings

Where did barn raisings get started?  During the 1700s and 1800s, folks in the United Kingdom helped each other build and in turn helped with other favors.  A community gathered or what they called a raising bee or rearing.  And the tradition moved to the United States.

Barn raisings still go on in many rural communities in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Canada.  And they use our favorite:  post and beam construction.  As a part of the Mennonite and Amish cultures, participation is usually mandatory.  A couple of days before the planned event comes lots of preparation and organization.  Plans are developed, the ground is cleared, lumber and hardware are lined up.  Skilled tradesmen are hired to oversee the volunteers.  Most of the raising bees happen in the warm summer months.

What we do it kind of like an old-fashioned barn raising.  Our crews stand in as your friends and neighbors.  In lieu of these group projects, property owners in Central Colorado come to us for help building barns.  Many say just make it happen, others like to be involved in the details and finishing touches.

4. Prepare site.
5. Receive truck delivery of components.
6. Build barn
