The Dancing White Horses
The noble Lipizzaner breed comes from Austrian historical and cultural heritage. For over 400 years, the Spanish Riding School in Vienna has produced the most graceful horses found anywhere. The school originally cultivated superior grace for the Austrian royalty. Horsemen of the Renaissance period were also taken by the finesse of these fine horses.
Now we see a number of young Coloradoans enthralled by the lovely Lipizzaner. These elegant creatures work in total attunement with their riders. Irresistibly beautiful, the dancing white horses seen in parades and at astonishing equestrian theaters receive classical training called dressage.
Horse Arenas for Dressage
Dressage is training for this performance art form. It includes a series of skills which are acquired one by one, much like classical ballet. Dressage competitions include a series of tests with increasing levels of difficulty. The United States Dressage Federation sanctions competitions within the United States. Nationally defined levels and gradated steps to reach them are part of the goal sets.
Dressage tests the abilities of each rider and horse through a series of movements. When well trained, the performance of the horse and rider is so smooth that the horse appears to be leading the “dance.” It is a class act.
Unfortunately, many horse properties in Central Colorado do not have the best facilities for dressage, “the highest expression of horse training.” Regulation arenas measure 66 feet by 197 feet. A smaller version is 66 feet by 131 feet. Very specific markers are scientifically placed throughout the arena. These define the movements and assist with training.
