Colorado Roping Arenas with Post Frame Buildings

Are you ready to rope? Whether new to the sport or seasoned, Colorado roping arenas adjacent to post frame buildings in Douglas County may be a good investment for your property.  Perhaps the World Series in Cheyenne has whetted your desire to join Frontier Days competitions in 2016.  Maybe you want to practice up to bring home the Champion Team Roper award at Blake Nelson’s arena in Longmont.  Maybe you are just warming up to the idea of roping.

Getting Starting: Colorado Roping Arenas

Even a five-acre property with an existing home in Douglas County has plenty of space for an attractive post frame building.  Special areas for horses, tack, grooming, and housing calves may be included in the design.

A larger building would allow year-round access if it includes an indoor roping arena.  A custom designed post-frame barn may be engineered with a holding corral and the narrow runway leading to the roping arena.  Chutes, box, and everything else used in professional roping circles can be included in the design.

What is Roping?

Colorado Roping arenasThe art of roping developed to catch cattle for branding. Riders used lassoes or lariats for early Mexican and American cattle ranching to capture steers.  This led to a series of roping competitions that are now a big part of modern-day rodeos.  Tie-Down Roping, Steer Roping, and Team Roping are among the most popular. As illustrated by Will Rogers, trick roping adds a performance of additional lasso tricks to the rodeo.

Team Roping is also known as Heading and Heeling. It is a common rodeo event that may include mixed teams of men and women. In team roping, two riders carry modern lassos as they pursue a running steer. The header ropes the front of the steer in one of three ways: by both horns, by the neck, or by one horn and the head. The header then turns the steer over while the heeler ropes the feet.
Roping Equipment

A few pieces of equipment are essential for roping:

  1. Western Saddle.  The horn helps control the rope and steer.
  2. Ropes, one type for the head and another for the heel rider.  Lassos, lariats, riatas, and reatas are variations.  Today’s lassos are generally made of synthetic materials.
  3. Roping Gloves are worn to protect the cowboy/cowgirl hands.
  4. Horn Wraps protect the horns of the calves
  5. Bell Boots/Splint Boots protect horses’ legs.
