Not Just Any Old Barn

Top-notch equestrian design incorporates several major factors.  The residential product may be a simple pole barn with hay storage and a couple of stalls, or it could be elaborate commercial equestrian facilities.  Most of our projects fall somewhere in between.

For many horse owners, the budget defines the type of buildings and facilities.  So, we prioritize.  Our designers the desired goals of the property owner with essentials.  For example, we go to the essentials.  The safety and health of horses and the people (caretakers, writers, owners, buyers, spectators) who will be present is imperative.  The residential product may be a simple pole barn with hay storage and a couple of stalls, or it could be elaborate commercial equestrian facilities.  Most of our projects fall somewhere in between and each one is special.

Building Site

The limitations of the building site may determine the possibilities.  It is best to include long-term plans when choosing the building site.  Since equestrian facilities have unique ventilation and drainage requirements, our team prefers to be involved in the selection of the building site.  By considering the terrain and curvature of the property, along with prevailing winds and light sources, our designers can minimize maintenance time and expense over the long run.  The high ceilings available through pole barn construction add modern solutions for ventilation.

Equestrian architects try to foresee future problems when siting the buildings.  For example, no one wants the headache of a muck smell wafting into a nearby house window.  Nor do horse lovers appreciate the mess of manure draining into the barn during stormy weather.  The barn will be warmer on the south side and west sides.  Windows and air spaces can be better placed if there are more options for how the building fits onto the land.  And then there is the need for shade.  So, you see, the building site does matter more than it may for another purpose, say a garage.

Functional Elements of an Equestrian Facility

Functional elements included in the design depend on the function and scope of the equine property.  Small equestrian buildings on residential properties may only require a stall, corral, tack room, grooming area, and feed storage.  Some of these owners include a storage room or a hobby room under the same roof.

Kick it up a notch.  Another person may house a half-dozen horses at their small boarding facility. This multiplies both the indoor and outdoor space requirements.  Some of these folks add a wash area, office, turn out spaces, and indoor/outdoor arenas.  And then there are more elaborate commercial horse facilities for showing, buying, and selling.
