Get Ready to Build a New Pole Barn

To begin building a new pole barn, begin to collect the information that you’ll need before meeting with a contractor. What do you need? Information about the site, permits, building uses, estimated size and cost, and builder references.

Customized Outbuildings

Most people want a collaborative partner who helps design and build a customized building. People search for plans for prefab garages in Colorado and find basic barns online. Usually, however, our clients have seen building plans online, such as four stall horse barn plans. They prefer customizing their new pole barns to fit their needs. Like putting a mechanic shop under the roof with horses.

Beginning Actions – New Pole Barn

Before launching the design stage of a building project, get answers to some basic questions. Every answer will affect the cost.

Building Site Information

  1. Where is your building site?
  2. Do you own the land?
  3. For site prep, do trees need to be remove?
  4. Is the ground level?
  5. Is there a potential drainage problem?
  6. Is there truck access To the building site?
  7. Is there space to unload building materials?
  8. Will you need electricity and water?

Permitting and Site Requirements

Inquire at your Planning and Zoning Commission. Find out if you will need a permit for the type of project you envision. Be aware that some government offices will move quickly while others may slow-walk your requests.

Size, Cost, and Property Value

How much does it cost to build a barn? Both the size and your design ideas play a role in determining the cost. For example, roofing design can change the costs. A simple barn costs less than one with a light monitor roof and ventilating cupolas on top. If you do not need a building to last forever, choose materials with lower costs.

Although the size of the building determines some of the cost, you may gain a better return on investment by expanding a few dimensions. The extra space adds flexibility into the future.

Building Uses

This brings us to the purpose of your building. Why are you building a new pole barn? Is this a guesthouse, office, horse stable, or commercial building? Will it be for storage? Do you simply need a big shed? What will be stored inside the building and how big is it? A tractor, an RV? And will you need separate spaces in the building or is it a completely open pull barn?

It costs more to insulate a building. Do you plan to work long hours in the building? Will the design include an office, a hobby shop, or a workshop? Do you need heating, electricity, or plumbing?

Aesthetics

The outer appearance of the building may or may not be important to you. Many commercial buildings and horse arenas turn out to be classy facilities. The owners add unique elements like rock or stone or timber. All extras such as wainscotting, porches, mansards, and offset entryways could add to your costs. So will those big overhead doors, special kinds of windows, and other favorite elements including landscaping.
