Private Luxury Garages to Protect those Muscle Car and Classic Car Investments
An increasing number of today’s car-collecting investors want luxury garages. Quite the showcases, these extraordinary auto shops become filled with rare cars or high-performing specimens from yesteryear. And that is not all. A private luxury garage may have all the bells and whistles plus social elements of a decked-out yacht. Just ask Jay Leno.
For example, even the city dweller can take advantage of modern technology to save space. Auto elevators, high-tech lifts, and organization systems come to the rescue. Have several cars? Some cars can be stored in subterranean lifts. Warehouses can be retrofitted with a load of beautifully organized equipment and a wet bar or guest quarters. How about adding an indoor sports court?
“Dream Garages”
“Dream garages: Eat, party and even sleep next to your wheels,” by Jura Koncius in the Washington Post (10/16/18) reported interesting data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics by the National Association of Home Builders. They found that single-family detached homeowners spent $3.2 billion in 2015 adding garages. Koncius says that ‘blinged up’ luxury garages are the new status symbol. Say nothing of the cars inside.
Hagerty Car Collector Insurance
According to Hagerty, the most prominent insurer for muscle cars and car collections, those well-kept car collections are quite large investments. On the lower end of the spectrum, investors can find less-expensive American collectibles at about $25,000. But prices jumped quickly from there. The 1950S American averages about $115,000, Blue Chip over $2.5 million, a Ferrari over $5.5 million. Muscle cars are being insured for over $325,000.
The company created the Hagerty Market, which measures the overall state of the classic vehicle market. It employs a comprehensive algorithm of weighted market/transactional data including” the world’s largest database of private sale transactions.” It is a great resource for the new investor and the experienced. And these treasured autos bring auto collectors together.
Garage Upgrades
These types of garage upgrades ramped up in popularity about 20 years ago. One man built a new home with the same design of his old condo. He thought he needed more garage space for his collector car. The space problem could have been solved with a hydraulic or mechanical lifting system. American Custom Lifts started making them in 1998 and prices begin at $3,000. Extras like lifts can go a long way to disguise the presence of a Lamborghini or a Tesla, or a special car for drag racing.
Another collector teamed up with Sapphire Construction to install a huge pole barn with metal kit interiors and a retro lounge. We can only imagine future projects, spurred on by current trends. What do you have in mind?
