Really Nice Horse Barns in Colorado
There are some really nice horse barns in Colorado, agreed? We see those big old barns in the pastoral rolling hills along Highway 83. They anchor ranches and farms where the hay fields blow in the breezes, horses turn out to pasture, and hundreds of cows speckle the Front Range territory.
Barns are symbols of the American countryside. Those still standing represent the best of traditional designs. Remnants of the Old West, some rustic, weathered shacks that once housed a horse or two are also scattered in the Rocky Mountains, Douglas County, Jefferson County and beyond.
But, how are these practical outbuildings holding up on our farms and ranches? Some better than others. The snow and wind coupled with the summer heat have definitely given the old historic horse barns in Colorado a run for their timbers.
Harbinger of Post Frame Construction
A good design for low-rise buildings, the pole barn appeared during the Depression. At the time, agricultural and equestrian operations began growing larger. They needed bigger facilities to house animals, equipment, and storage. To save time and money, they consolidated and joint forces.
One effort to save money was the harbinger of the modern post frame design. Builders began incorporating utility poles into barn design. Over time, a number of additional building products were created to support the design. These materials were specifically invented to cut costs. And they helped reduce the time it took to build reliable outbuildings. Galvanized steel siding and roofing, for example, enhanced the durability of outbuildings. Several samples of these early barns stand in Colorado.
The Modern Pole Building
Since that time, there been many improvements to pole barns. Now each facet of the building is specifically engineered to maximize efficiency. From commercial stables and arenas to boarding facilities and personal stables, the modern pole building is energy-efficient, safety tested, and highly functional.
Due to the extraordinary architectural design, the casual observer may not even perceive the inner strength of these buildings. The exteriors may be color-coordinated with other buildings.
Multi-Faceted Uses
Artful designs incorporate numerous functions under one roof with a clear span. These are not your grandpa’s barns. They offer excellent ventilation, lighting, heating and cooling, and all the creature comforts desired by their owners. Nowadays the modern barn possibly includes offices, residential areas, game rooms, storage areas, garages, and other needed spaces.
